BHR1287 is the radio service operated by Basildon Hospital Radio which is a registered charity. Hospital Radio has been broadcasting to the patients, staff and visitors of Basildon Hospital since 1974. Shortly after Basildon Hospital opened, the station began its road to success, transmitting from a small studio in the tower block of Basildon Hospital. Things have certainly moved on in 30 years; since relocating in 1993 we have moved to purpose built, fully equipped studios. .

All the money donated to Basildon Hospital Radio goes towards running the radio service. We have no paid officers and all administration costs are paid for by our volunteers via a membership subscription.

We now broadcast 24 hours a day. This is run through an automated service; our computer plays a continuous mixture of news, features and request show favourites. And since December 2000, we now broadcast not only on headsets and day room wall speakers on each ward, but also on 1287 Medium Wave across Basildon Hospital!
